The Historic Shuford Species List comes from the 1993 publication by David Shuford entitled "The Marin County Breeding Bird Atlas: A Distributional and Natural History of Coastal California Birds". Our current re-survey of Marin County's breeding birds follows the methods of this previous atlas project.

This page now allows the user to download the current data on a species filtered to their desired breeding codes (see below). This KML can be displayed on a map on a desktop computer in software such as the free Google Earth, or on a phone with such apps as Map Plus (please see "More Resources" tab for information on using this). The data from the blue "download species" button only contains blocks with current data for the given species.

Breeding Codes

The species present in a block may be filtered by the following breeding parameters:

1. Confirmed: This lists all the species that have been recorded with the codes/observations that confirm breeding
2. Confirmed, Probable: This lists all the species that have been recorded with the codes/observations that both confirm and indicate probable breeding
3. Confirmed, Probable, Possible: This lists all the species that have been recorded with the codes/observations that support possible or probable breeding, or that confirm breeding

These options all eliminate species that were detected in the block but without evidence to suggest they might be breeding there (e.g., those known to not breed there such as migrants, those that might be dispersing, etc). For the current Atlas, it is generated predominantly with survey data submitted in CADC; data submitted via the Incidental form, eBird, by other scientific monitoring programs, and recently on CADC will be delayed in their inclusion here.

Sensitive Species

The following species were removed from this map as they were deemed sensitive:

1. Ridgway's Rail
2. Black Rail
3. Snowy Plover
4. Bald Eagle
5. Spotted Owl
